This is a very RARE original David Leffel oil on canvas landscape painting. It’s titled "Farmhouse with Chickens, Pietrasanta". He’s only painted a handful of landscapes over his career. He painted this one over the course of about a year and a half. It’s date 3/98 - 7/99. This is a major work. It’s a tour de force. It looks incredible in person, such a beautifully rendered painting. The use of color is so varied and expertly handled. The sky, the mountains, the trees, even the chickens are quite charming. All the images were taken outside under natural light. On David Leffel’s website you can see this work under his archived paintings. (Reference the last image. It’s on the bottom left corner)
I’ve dealt in a handful of Mr. Leffel’s works over the years and I’ve only ever come across one single landscape in person and this is it. So I cannot overemphasize the rarity of this work. This will assuredly be a cornerstone to any collector of David Leffel’s works or any Southwestern art collection. He’s such a great and knowledgeable artist as well as teacher. Those who have had the pleasure to be taught by him, or who have attended one of his many workshops could attest to that fact.
I’m offering it here with no reserve. Its original gallery tag has it priced at $18,500.00. Another landscape isn’t likely to come onto the market within the foreseeable future, so bid with confidence. The winning bidder will take it home.
David A Leffel’s peers not only recognize him as a painters’ painter but he is also considered by many to be no less than the artistic reincarnation of Rembrandt. He grew up in New York City, where he had a brief career in advertising, but he eventually came to chiaroscuro painting at the Art Students league and would become a revered instructor, sharing his special understanding of painting with thousands of students for more than 20 years.
Leffel has had numerous one-man shows. His most recent retrospective was at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art in Malibu, California in 2016, and was accompanied by a scholarly book titled David A Leffel: The Mastery of Light. In this book Weisman Museum director Michael Zakian chronicles Leffel’s importance in art history, giving the reader new insights into his genius.
His work can be found in permanent museum collections throughout the United States, as well as in numerous private collections in America and abroad. Leffel has written two books that have met worldwide acclaim for their ability to integrate his understanding of technical aspects of painting with his philosophy of the aesthetics of beauty
